Beth Came to Us 8 Weeks Out From Her Marathon. Here's What Happened.

Beth Nichol's first marathon - and what it taught us about compliance, honesty, and what a plan actually does.

Beth Nichol came back to us eight weeks before the Runaway Noosa Marathon 2026.
We say "came back" because she'd been with us before - signed on, life got in the way, stopped. That's not a failure. That's just life, especially when you're working 12-hour paramedic night shifts and raising twin toddlers.
But when she re-engaged, we had to be straight with her.
"Eight weeks isn't the ideal runway for a first marathon. We want 12-16 weeks minimum to build properly. But here's what we can do - we can get you to that finish line safely, with a plan, and without breaking you in the process."
She said yes. And then she did something most athletes struggle to do: she actually followed the plan.
Where she was starting from
Before that 8-week block, Beth was running 25-40km per week with no real structure. No speed work. No progressive load. Her longest run was 15km in the build up to the race. She was also doing daily HIIT classes on top of her running - burning energy she didn't have, on top of shifts that were already taking everything out of her.
She was fit. She was motivated. But she was accumulating a mix of fatigue and fitness.
This is one of the most common patterns we see - especially in high-performing, Type-A people. The instinct is always more. More sessions, more kilometres, more effort. And it almost always leads to the same place: stuck at the same fitness level, nursing a niggle, wondering why nothing is improving.
More miles does not equal marathon ready.
What the Marathon 8-week block actually looked like
We stripped it back. Structured speed sessions instead of junk miles. Bike cross-training to absorb load without piling on impact. Custom watch alerts programmed through Final Surge to keep her honest on pace — because Beth's instinct, like most strong runners, is to go too hard too early.
We also built out race week protocols: carbohydrate timing, taper management, pre-race morning routine. And we talked her through a race strategy that we've used with athletes at every level.

She broke the marathon into three parts:
First third: Legs. Start conservative. The watch will lie to you. Ignore it. Second third: Brain. It gets uncomfortable here. That's the point. You've trained for this. Final third: Heart. Remember why you're there. That's your fuel now.
The hardest part of coaching Beth wasn't the programming. It was reining her in. She wanted to do more. Extra sessions, extra kilometres. We said no - and she trusted us.
That trust is what paid dividends.
Race day
Her watch was screaming that she was going too fast in the first 20km. She felt good, held the pace, and filed away the voice in her head (and ours, apparently) telling her to slow down.
Calves tightened at km 30. She kept running.

Her Family being there wasn't an accident. Having something to run toward on every loop is race strategy too.
Gels every 30 minutes. Zero GI issues. And in the Last km - she put the foot down.
3:51:52. 392nd of 1,001 finishers. Top 10, Female 35–39.

First marathon. Ever.
Night shifts. Twin toddlers. Eight weeks. Sub-optimal conditions on almost every metric.
No excuses.
What this actually proves
Beth's story isn't about natural talent or perfect preparation. It's about what happens when you take a structured plan seriously and execute it with discipline.
The fundamentals work:
A plan beats volume. Structured, progressive load beats piling on kilometres.
Speed work matters. You can't race fast if you never train fast.
Compliance is the variable. The best programme in the world does nothing if you only follow it when it feels good.
Race strategy is non-negotiable. Going out too hard in a marathon doesn't just hurt your time - it breaks you. The three-thirds framework isn't motivational fluff. It's pacing science.

We told Beth we needed 16 weeks to do this properly. We got 8. And we're genuinely proud of what she achieved - not just the result, but the way she got there.
